A bit of history

Local inhabitants left the temple city in the 15th century after the capture of the peninsula by troops. Only in the 19th century, Angkor was discovered in the middle of the jungle. Beauty of the palaces and magnificent temple complexes have become available to the whole world again. All undestroyed buildings were erected on special technology from stone blocks and without the use of binders. The most famous temple in Angkor is the Angkor Wat Temple, which was erected in the 12th century. This sacred building impresses with its refinement and harmony, which is specific for Asian architecture.

Angkor Wat

It is a pearl of the temple complex. This temple was built during the rise of the entire Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat is the largest house of worship in the world. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a national symbol of the Kingdom of Cambodia. It usually takes 1 - 2 hours to view Angkor Wat.

South gate Angor Thom.jpg

South gate Angkor Thom

The ancient city of Angkor Thom is still surrounded by a wall along the perimeter, and its perimeter is absolutely square in shape. Four walls are situated strictly in accordance with the cardinal directions. To get to the Bayon Temple, which is located in the very center, you need to pass through the south gate. This is a great place for taking of photos. Entrance to the gate is performed over the bridge over the moat, which in its turn surrounds the walls of Angor Thom. From the right and left the bridge is decorated with restored statues of angels and demons - religious characters of the ancient Khmer culture.

bayon.jpg

Bayon

It's a temple consisting of 54 towers. The sculptures with the image of 216 Bayon's faces are often called the "Angkor's Smile". Architecturally, it's a very interesting temple. Many tourists put it first. It does not look like Angkor Wat at all, and was the central temple of the ancient Khmer empire for a long time. The temple visit time is usually 1 - 2 hours.

Elephant Terrace

It is situated in the center of the old city of Angkor Thom. In the past, the temple was situated on the Royal Square, where the king gave audiences, hosted guests and watched the performances.

Baphuon

Prasat Bapuon is located 200 meters northwest of Bayon and south of the Phimeanakas Temple. Entrance to and exit from the temple are from the east.

Phimeanakas

Ta Prohm

phimanekas.jpg

The royal heavenly temple is interesting for its unusual architecture and height. This is the highest temple in Angkor Thom. A marvelous landscape of the nearest area opens up from the tower.

This temple has already partially been cleared of the jungle. In 2012, the Cambodian government decided to cut down several giant trees that encircled the walls of the temple because of the serious threat of their damage. However, the trees that remained still make an unforgettable impression. The famous movie "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" starring Jolie was filmed at Ta Prohm Temple. Curious to relate, but the temple, which has almost a thousand-year history, got the name "Temple of Angelina Jolie". The name of the temple Ta Prohm is translated as a tower of five golden peaks. The construction carries the positive energy with what the temple was endued by Buddhist monks in the 14th century. This energy can be felt by everyone who visits the temple.
